Siddhesh Recommends - January 2023
The best stuff I've listened to, watched, and read last month.
Siddhesh Recommends is a series in which I share the most memorable stuff I come across each month.
These posts are transient - I keep only the three most recent ones on the website. You can email me for previous ones and subscribe for the latest.
Enjoy!
Parasite (2019) - movie review (article)
“There is a line, and it cannot be crossed.
There is a world, and it is nice, but not really. There are houses on hills, and houses underground. There is plenty of sun, but it isn't for everybody. There are people grateful to be slaves, and people unhappy to be served. There are systems that we are born into, and they create these lines that cannot be crossed. And we all dream of something better, but we've been living with these lines for so long that we've convinced ourselves that there really isn't anything to be done.”
Pardon the hyperbole but this might be my favourite movie review, ever.
Ghodey Pe Sawaar (song)
22 things I liked about 2022 (article)
“Years go by way faster as you get older. It is extremely different than when you are in school and had a routine similar to your peers whom you say pretty much every day. That was when days moved slower and you had relatively lesser worries (no rent to pay!). But as you grow older and start living independently – you realize that life is what you make of it. From the place you stay, your friends, and how frequently you go out coupled with a solid 9-5 job one year is already gone before you know it.”
My friend Aakash wrote this. A lot of points here will be relatable to my fellow Indian students in the US I think.
Dreams Tonite (song)
Dad moved hearing Beach House - Space Song (12 min. video)
I love seeing a person getting mesmerized by art in real time. The video is a great example of the power of music and how it can captivate people across generations. The banter is great too.
Cityscape paintings by Jeremy Mann (art)
I don’t know anything about art (the painting kind) but holy shit these paintings stunned me.
See the link above for more.
Gullak (TV series) (link to pilot episode)
Watched the whole series with the fam in Jan. One of my favourite shows of the year already. (Sadly no subtitles on the link :( )
“Ordinarily he was insane, but he had lucid moments when he was merely stupid.”
- Heinrich Heine
Fin.
Enjoying these links. Agree, these Mann paintings are stunning.
